Historial Talk
Rev Malcolm Deacon
Malcolm is well known in the local villages, a member of the local Historical Society. He covers a variety of talks, including giving lectures at a variety of Universities and public events. He is always a hit with our members.
'Growing Up in the 40s and 50s'
based on Malcolm's memoirs - Swim Ginger
Malcom is always a popular speaker at our WI as we know him so well. He intersperses his talks with wit, humour, historical knowledge and little personal touches. He chose the title of his book from a command his swimming teacher had shouted to him when aged 11 he was thrown into a swimming pool. He didn't learn to swim then but finally made it at 19 years old. He then went on to be a lifeguard and taught over 1000 children to swim during his career as a school teacher.
His early years were during the Second World War, as he was born in 1940, so he was mainly brought up by his mother. The memories he shared were ones that a lot of our members could relate to, even the younger ones had recollection of some of the subjects. Times have changed, as we all know, and his talk reminded us all of the freedom we had enjoyed as children, but what is denied our children and grandchildren today.
His talk and photographs on the screen were enjoyed by all the members and he was warmly thanked by Susan.
