September 10th 2015
At the beginning of the meeting, all members present were assembled outside the hall to have a commemorative photograph taken to celebrate, not only The WI's 100th anniversary but our own 90th.
The Story Behind the Picture
Sue Edwards
Sue is a popular speaker within the WI circuit and a variety of Art Groups. Sue is an interesting and passionate speaker with an amazing wealth of knowledge and understanding of art. A requested return visit for Sue to our W.I.
Review of the evening
Sue began her talk by showing us a gruesome painting of a man's head made completely out of produce from the sea. It had fish, an octopus, pearls, crabs, plants etc forming the structure of the face and head. She went to show a variety of paintings from different genre and periods of time, from pre-Raphaelite, Degas, Hogarth and ending with Perez who is a more modern painter specialising in glamorous people, particularly his wife. She explained how the artist was thinking and what had encouraged him to paint as he did. Her talks certainly bring paintings to life and you end up looking at them in a different way.
Competition - Picture says 1000 words
This subject brought out a lot of interest in members, with many taking part in the competition. There were several photographs of family and friends in amusing poses with captions and a variety of other ideas. The winner was a picture of The Mona Lisa made up entirely of the artist's name many many times over - possibly 1000! Second place was a photograph of a member's grandmother with her hockey team, complete with long skirt and third a member and her husband celebrating their Golden Wedding.
