Clean Rivers for People and wildlife

This campaign is encouraging members to make and support applications to create bathing waters in rivers across England and Wales as a way to drive the cleanup of our precious waters.

Water quality in our rivers is shameful. Legally designated bathing waters must be regularly monitored for pollution. The NFWI urges its members, the wider public, local authorities, and Government to make, support and promote applications for officially designated bathing sites on appropriate stretches of rivers in their area. This will be instrumental to the clean-up of rivers as it has been for water quality improvement at coastal beaches.
In support of this Campaign, Jean Bates and her Campaigns and Concerns Team put on a Coffee Morning at WI House.
It was good to hear the enthusiastic and passionate team of Molly, Mandy and Victor from Nene Rivers Trust informing us of the great work they are doing to improve the environment in Northamptonshire.

Well done to Moulton Evening WI who joined the 'Clean Rivers' March in London, further supporting this campaign. They report there was a speaker on behalf of the WI and members of the National Board of Trustees were on the March. A really good cause for the WI to be supporting.

24.04 ExplainingTwo groups of members recently visited the Water Treatment Centre at Billing, Northampton. Kitted out in boots and hi-vis jackets we were given a really interesting tour around the extensive water treatment facility. One of the largest in the UK we were given a huge amount of information about what happens when water enters the drains from our homes, factories, hospitals etc and also from rainfall. With all the publicity about the state of waterways and coasts, it proved to be most interesting afternoon .
